State Parks to Visit Near Fort Lauderdale, FL

Once you book a trip to Fort Lauderdale, you may be thinking about what else there is to do besides visiting the beach. Fort Lauderdale is everyone’s vacation destination. There’s beaches, shopping, dining and state parks where visitors can hike and explore. Here are some of our favorite state parks in the area and what to do at each.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Hugh Taylor Birch is located right in Fort Lauderdale off the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. It’s just a short walk from the beach and other popular attractions where you may be spending your time. The park itself has beach areas for swimming and is a popular spot to rent a canoe or kayak to paddle through the freshwater lagoon. The park is home to several of Florida’s native birds and a giant banyan tree in the center of the park. If you’re looking for a cheaper option for beach parking, the park’s admission rates are significantly lower than other Fort Lauderdale beaches.

Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park (John U. Lloyd)

Located in Dania Beach, this state park is known for its beautiful beach views. The park was just recently named Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park after the two civil rights activists who worked to end segregated beaches in Florida. The park is home to local Florida wildlife with small nature trails winding off the beach area. It’s also an ideal spot for boating, fishing and there are well-kept picnic areas if you’re planning on spending a whole day at the park.

Oleta River State Park

Located in North Miami, Oleta River State Park is a bit of a drive from Fort Lauderdale, but worth a visit if you’re renting a car or visiting both cities. The park is located on Biscayne Bay, known for its turquoise waters situated next to bustling Miami. The beautiful waters are great for swimming and kayaking among Florida’s native sea life. Part of the park is a mangrove forest that helps protect Florida’s wildlife. If you like to get active on vacation, this park is one of the best places for trail biking. There are several trails ranging in difficulty throughout the park with picnic and swimming areas along the way.

Florida’s natural state parks help break up the busyness of a vacation and let you appreciate the natural world around you. If you’re considering staying in Fort Lauderdale, check out Fort Lauderdale condo rentals so you can relax and enjoy your vacation in a private home.
